In the last episode (which you should read if you haven't yet), we met Arthur's new love interest--Emma Tremayne. We also saw the beginning of the Felix and Izzy feud which continues into this episode. This time, the Felix and Izzy battle escalates, Sara leaves for Montreal, and Jasper and Olivia get ready to go to England...but not without complications.

Welcome to the second episode, appropriately titled "Farewells."

OPENING CREDITS

Voice-over: Previously on Road to Avonlea...

SCENE MONTAGE: Flashbacks from "So Dear to My Heart" and "After the Wedding Is Over"

1) Jasper and Olivia announcing their decision to leave Avonlea and Hetty's disapproval.

2) Sara jumping out of a man's carriage in front of Rose Cottage, greeting Aunt Hetty.

3) Sara greeting Felicity before her marriage to Gus.

4) Sara telling Felicity, "Nanny Louisa has me going back as soon as possible."

5) Felix talking to Gus about joining the Navy

6) Felix walking out of the King Farm house, dressed in a Naval uniform, Alec and Janet's shock, then Felix saying, "I guess rebel blood runs in the family."

7) Felix talking to Cecily at the beach about his enlisting.

8) Izzy talking to Muriel about Felix.

9) Felix reading Izzy's note, when it gets to: "Someday you will know how I feel, but not yet."

Fade out. Then fade into...

SCENE: Sara's room at Rose Cottage. Evening. Sara is packing some of her things into her trunk. A few seconds later, there is a knock at the door.

Sara (loudly): Come in!

Hetty opens the door and steps into the room.

Hetty: Supper's ready if you want to come down, Sara.

Sara (still packing): I'll be right down.

Hetty walks over to Sara and puts an arm around her.

Hetty: I wish you didn't have to leave Avonlea so soon.

Sara looks at Hetty with a sad expression on her face.

Sara (in a near-melancholy tone): I wish I didn't have to go so soon, either, but I promised Nanny Louisa I'd go see her as soon as I could before I go back to school. You understand, Aunt Hetty.

Hetty: Yes, I suppose I do.

Sara and Hetty share a hug. Then they leave the room arm in arm and begin to descend the stairs.

Sara: You know what's so strange? It seems like a bunch of us are leaving soon. I'm going to Montreal tomorrow. Felix is going to Naval training in Halifax a few days later, and Aunt Olivia and Uncle Jasper are leaving for England the day before Felix leaves. I never thought so many of us would be leaving all at once. It's almost scary to think about it.

By now Sara and Hetty are in the dining area.

Hetty (sitting down): I know, Sara dear. I'm still in shock myself.

Sara sits in the seat to Hetty's left.

Sara: I have no regrets, though. That's the important thing.

Hetty: You're right, dear. That is the important thing.

Cut to...

SCENE: Avonlea train station, the next morning. The entire King family is there to see Sara off. Camera focuses on Sara with Felicity, Gus, Felix, and Cecily.

Felicity: We're going to miss you, Sara Stanley. I wish you didn't have to go to Montreal so soon. I wanted you to stay and visit a little longer.

Sara (in a pity-filled tone): I know, Felicity, but I made a promise to Nanny Louisa. I don't want to break it.

Felix: I know you made a promise, Sara, but couldn't you wait a little longer to go see her?

Sara puts a re-assuring arm on Felix's shoulder.

Sara: Believe me, Felix, if I could wait to go see her, I would. However, I'm going back to Paris in a week and a half, so I have to go see her now. You understand, right?

Felix leans in and gives Sara a friendly hug.

Felix: Of course I do.

Felix and Sara let go of each other. Then Felicity exchanges hugs with Sara. After they let go, Gus shares a hug with her.

Gus: You take care of yourself, Sara.

They let go as Cecily approaches Sara.

Sara (in a firm, yet playful tone): You be a good girl, Cecily King. Do you hear me?

Cecily: I'll try. I can't guarantee it, but I'll try.

Cecily and Sara hug. Then the two of them, along with Felix, Felicity, and Gus, walk toward the train, where Alec, Janet, Hetty, Olivia, and Jasper are waiting. Sara hugs and says her goodbyes to the elder five (this is ad-libbed). Afterward, Sara gives her train ticket to the ticket-master and boards the train. The remaining family members step back and begin to wave to her, as she waves in return.

King Family: Bye, Sara!/See you soon!/Love you!

The train begins to leave the station.

Sara (loudly): Bye, everyone!

As the train pulls further away, various members of the King family stop waving. After the train is out of view...

Janet (in a sad tone): And then there were three. Can you believe it?

Alec: No. Sara will be back. So will Olivia and Jasper, and Felix after they leave. I'm sure of it.

Alec puts a re-assuring arm around Janet, and they walk away. Later, Olivia and Jasper follow suit, and one by one everyone else leaves. Cut to...

SCENE: The living room at the Foundling Home. An hour later. Felicity, Gus, Jasper, Olivia, and baby Alicia are seated on the sofa and chairs, respectively, sipping tea.

Gus: Are you two excited about moving to England?

Jasper: Yes, we are. I c-c-can't believe we're l-l-l-l...(He moves his arm in a circular motion as if to ask, "What's the word I'm trying to say?")

Felicity (realizing): Leaving?

Jasper: Yes, leaving. I can't believe we're leaving so...soon. (He nervously takes a sip of his tea.)

Olivia: I can't believe it, either. It's like I'm excited and nervous all at once. Excited for Jasper taking this job, yet nervous because I'm leaving home, possibly for good.

Felicity: But you'll come back and see us, Aunt Olivia. You always come back to your home and to those you love.

Olivia: You're right; I will come back.

Gus gets up and heads for the kitchen, cup in hand. Meanwhile, Belle-Marie and Callie come downstairs, with Montgomery holding their hands.

Olivia (looking up): Callie, Belle-Marie; is something wrong with Montgomery?

Belle-Marie (very matter-of-factly): No, Mrs. Dale. We were just going to take him for a walk.

Olivia: Go ahead; just stay close to the house.

Belle-Marie, Callie, and Montgomery exit. Gus returns to the living room.

Olivia (to Felicity and Gus): Anyway, we're very excited. I know everyone but Hetty is happy for us.

Felicity (putting an arm around Olivia): I know Aunt Hetty is having a hard time with it, but don't worry about her. You and Jasper are happy with the decision; that's the important thing. Don't worry about Aunt Hetty or anyone else.

Olivia (feeling a new sense of self-esteem): You're right. Hetty can't run my life forever! Thank you, Felicity!

SCENE: The road to King Farm and Rose Cottage. Afternoon.

Izzy is walking down the road, frustrated, sad, and upset all at once. She's on the way to the King Farm house to see Felix. Now we cut to...

SCENE: The kitchen at King Farm. Same time. Felix is in there, sitting at the table, with Alec and Janet.

Janet (extremely upset): What were you thinking, Felix King? Why did you go behind our backs and join the Navy? Why?

Felix (exasperated): That's why I didn't tell you, because you would go crazy. I'm almost eighteen years old, Mother. I'm old enough to make my own decisions.

Alec: You still should have said something, Felix. Don't you think we deserved to know?

Just as Felix begins to answer, there is a knock at the front door.

Felix (standing up): I'll get it.

Alec (holding up a hand): No. You stay here; I'll get it.

Felix sits back down as Alec walks to the door. He opens it and sees Izzy standing on the other side.

Alec (holding the door open): Come on in, Izzy.

Izzy enters and follows Alec into the kitchen.

Izzy (to Felix, nearly breaking): We need to talk.

SCENE: Continued from earlier.

Alec: Izzy, we're kinda busy at the moment.

Izzy (trembling): I know, and I'm sorry, but I need to talk to Felix now. If I don't, I'm going to go crazy.

Alec: Well...alright.

Alec and Janet go upstairs, leaving Felix and Izzy alone.

Felix (motioning to an empty chair next to him): Sit down. (She does.) What's wrong?

Izzy (clasping her hands together): We need to talk about this. (Felix gives her a "What do you mean?" look.) About you, enlisting. Why did you do it and not tell me?

Felix: You seemed okay at Gus and Felicity's wedding.

Izzy (nearly broken): I know. Outside I was like, 'Gus and Felicity are getting married. This is their day. I can do this.' Inside, I totally ignored the wedding and thought, 'Oh my God. Felix in uniform...' (She takes a deep breath, and, in a whisper, continues...) '...and he didn't tell me.'

She buries her head in her hands and begins to cry. Felix puts an arm around her, but she gets up from her seat before he can do much else.

Felix: Izzy, please.

Izzy (in tears): Why didn't you tell me, Felix? I thought we were friends. I thought we were kindred spirits. I thought we could tell each other anything! Why didn't you tell me about this?

Felix: I didn't want to hurt you.

Izzy: If you told me, at least I would've known. I'm more hurt because you didn't tell me. I don't understand it.

Izzy, still quite shaken, walks out of the kitchen, and then out of the house. Felix looks stunned. Defeated, he folds his arms onto the table and buries his head in them.

SCENE: The kitchen at Rose Cottage. Evening. Rachel Lynde, Hetty, and Dora are washing and drying dishes, while Davey is upstairs getting ready to spend the night at the Foundling Home. There is about ten seconds of silence; then...

Rachel (stacking dishes near the sink): Merciful Providence, Hetty. Say something. You haven't said two words to us all evening. (Hetty gives her an angry glare.) Don't look at me like that. I'm just trying to get you to talk to us.

Dora (encouragingly): Yeah, Miss King. We know you're upset because Sara left today, and you're still sad because Mr. and Mrs. Dale are leaving in three days, but it would do you some good to talk about it.

Hetty (in an angry tone): Leave me alone. (Louder.) Don't you understand? Everyone's leaving me! They're...they're...

She slams down the dishes in her hands onto the counter. Then she leans in, puts her elbows on the counter in between the dishes, buries her head in her hands, and lets out a wail. Dora sets her dishes in the sink and puts an arm around Hetty. Rachel does the same.

Rachel (in a comforting tone): There, there.

Dora: It's alright, Miss King. I'm sure Sara and Mr. and Mrs. Dale will visit. You're going to be fine.

Hetty (worried): No, I won't. Especially not with Olivia leaving me. I need to make sure she's okay. I want to go with her.

Rachel (matter-of-factly): You're sounding more like her mother than her sister.

Hetty (looking up at Rachel): I had a hand in raising her, Rachel Lynde. I see it as my duty that I accompany Olivia and Jasper to England.

Rachel: She's an adult now, Hetty. She has been for a while. Merciful Providence, when are you going to realize your sister is an independent woman who knows her own mind and can make her own decisions? (Long pause.) Well, Dora and I are going to take Davey over to the Foundling Home. That way, you'll have some time alone to think about all this.

Rachel goes out the side door to get the wagon. Dora goes upstairs to get Davey. Hetty is left alone in her anguish. She takes a deep breath and continues washing dishes.

SCENE: The living room at the Foundling Home. Half an hour later. Felicity is sitting up reading with Gus, while the Deans are upstairs.

Felicity: Do you really think Aunt Olivia and Uncle Jasper are excited about leaving Avonlea?

Gus: Sure. Why wouldn't they be?

Felicity: I don't know. You would think they would be, but the way Aunt Olivia was today, I could sort of tell she was having second thoughts.

There's a knock at the door. Felicity gets up to answer it; Davey, Dora, and Rachel enter.

Felicity (in a loud voice): Edgar! Duffy! Davey's here!

Edgar and Duffy run down the stairs.

Duffy: Hey, Davey. Dora. Mrs. Lynde.

Rachel: Hello, boys. (To Davey) Be good now. Mind Felicity and Gus, and have a good time.

Davey: I will, Mrs. Lynde. See you tomorrow.

Dora: Have fun, Davey. Say hello to Belle-Marie and Callie for me.

Davey: I will.

Edgar: Come on up, Davey. We've got something to show you...

Edgar's voice trails off as he, Duffy, and Davey ascend the stairs.

Rachel (to Felicity): Mind if I talk to you for a minute?

Felicity: Not a bit. (She turns to Dora.) Why don't you go upstairs and visit with the girls?

Dora nods with a smile on her face and runs upstairs. Rachel follows Felicity into the living room. Cut to...

SCENE: The streets of Avonlea. Day before Olivia and Jasper leave for England. Felix is walking to the store with Cecily.

Cecily: Are you nervous?

Felix (confused): About what?

Cecily: You're leaving in two days, Felix. Aren't you nervous?

Felix: A little. But I'm excited, too, you know.

Cecily: I can imagine. You've probably got ants in your pants; you're so excited to get out of the house and away from Mother and Father.

Felix: Yeah, I am. I'm already picturing the day I leave. She'll probably be a nervous wreck.

Cecily: I know. She'll be like (in a higher-pitched voice), "Oh, Felix, my baby; don't leave me. I hate seeing my babies leave the house." (Then, back in her real voice...) She'll be having a nervous breakdown; I'm sure.

Camera glances at Izzy walking out of the General Store. Felix and Cecily rush over to her.

Cecily/Felix: Hey, Izzy.

Izzy: Hello, Cecily.

Felix: Um, Izzy. I'm here, too. Hello?

Izzy (ignoring him): Cecily, please tell your brother I'm not speaking to him right now.

Felix: Cecily, please tell Izzy she better damn well start speaking to me. I am leaving in two days, you know.

Cecily: Will both of you stop it? You're acting like school children!

Izzy: I'm not acting like a school-girl!

Felix: I'm not acting like a school-boy! If any one of us is acting like a school child, it's her (pointing at Izzy)!

Izzy: Cecily, please tell your brother to stop acting so childish.

Felix: Cecily, please tell Izzy I'm not the one acting like a child!

Felix walks back to King Farm, exasperated. Izzy walks back in the direction of her house. Cecily lets out a sigh and walks into the store. Cut to...

SCENE: The outside of the Dale house. Early afternoon. Olivia is taking clothes off her clothesline, while Hetty is approaching her.

Hetty (calling out): Olivia!

Olivia looks over her shoulder.

Olivia: Hetty! Hello!

Hetty: I've been doing some thinking about you and Jasper going to London.

Olivia: Yeah. We're nearly completely packed up. I can't believe we're leaving tomorrow.

Hetty: Yes, about that. (She takes a deep breath.) I'd like to go with you.

Olivia (shocked): What?!

Hetty: Yes. To help you get settled in; that's all. Then I'd return here to Avonlea.

Olivia gives Hetty the evil eye.

Olivia: No, Hetty. Jasper and I made this decision on our own. We're going to do this on our own without any help. Not even from you.

Hetty (matter of factly): My mind is made up. I'm going with you and Jasper. You need help; I'm going with you, and that's that. (When she says, "that's that," she sticks up her finger in true Hetty-esque fashion.)

Olivia (in an angry tone): If I wanted help, Hetty King, I would've asked for it. I didn't need help moving out of Rose Cottage after I got married; I sure don't need help moving to England.

Olivia finishes taking the clothes off the clothesline. She throws everything into a large basket and walks into her house, exasperated.

SCENE: The Dale dining room. Directly after Olivia's confrontation with Hetty. Jasper walks in from the living room as Olivia does from outside.

Olivia (looking at Jasper): I will never understand that woman as long as I live.

Jasper (confused): Who?

Olivia (setting her basket down on the table): Hetty! She wants to go with us to England, supposedly to help us get settled in. She really wants to go just to keep her protective sense over me.

Jasper (walking over to Olivia): She can't do that. She just c-c-can't.

Jasper wraps his arms around Olivia's waist.

Olivia: Oh, but she will, Jasper. I know it.

Jasper: Then we'll just have to go over to Rose Cottage and t-t-tell her she will not go with us. We need to do this ourselves.

Olivia (re-gaining her sense of dignity): You're right, Jasper! I'm just going to go over there and give Hetty my two cents worth.

Jasper: Good for you. I'll go with you.

He lets go of her waist and they walk out of the house.

SCENE: The parlor at Rose Cottage. Afternoon. Olivia and Jasper are confronting Hetty.

Olivia: Hetty, have you lost your senses? You can't possibly go with Jasper and me to England. You have your hands full here with Davey and Dora, not to mention school's about to start again soon.

Hetty: I can ask Mr. Pettibone to fill in for me. My mind is made up, Olivia; I will go with you and Jasper to England.

Olivia: You know what this reminds me of? It reminds me of when Sara told you and Ms. Banks she wanted to study in Paris. Both of you wanted to go with her, remember?

Hetty (defensively): That's different.

Olivia: No, it's not. You wanted to go with her because you were afraid she wouldn't make it on her own. Now you want to go with us to England for the same reason. You're afraid, Hetty King. You're afraid Jasper and I won't make it on our own so far away from you. Well, guess what? We've done fine on our own here; we'll be fine in England.

Jasper (nervous): O-Olivia does have...a p-p-p-p-point, Hetty.

Hetty: When I want your opinion, Jasper Dale, I'll ask for it. This is between Olivia and me.

Olivia (outraged): How dare you say that about my husband! He is as much a part of the family as everyone else. (She turns to him.) Come on, Jasper.

Olivia and Jasper begin to walk out. As they get to the front door, Olivia turns to face Hetty.

Olivia: When you're ready to give me and Jasper the proper respect, you can meet us at the train station tomorrow morning to say goodbye.

She and Jasper finally walk out. Rachel enters from the kitchen, shocked.

Rachel: What was that commotion all about?

Hetty: Olivia won't allow me to accompany her and Jasper to England.

Rachel: Gracious Providence, Hetty King! Have you lost your mind?

Hetty: She needs my help, Rachel.

Rachel: Olivia's a grown woman, Hetty. She and Jasper are going to be fine. You know what your problem is? You're afraid, that's what. You're afraid of losing your family all at once--first Sara, now Olivia and Jasper, and then Felix soon after. You're especially afraid that your sister and Jasper are leaving because Olivia's never been so far away from you before. I mean, you had a hand in raising her, and now that she's leaving home, your motherly instincts have taken over, and you're scared to death. It's time to let her go, Hetty. Think about that between now and tomorrow.

Rachel goes back to the kitchen. Camera shifts back to Hetty, who has an anguished look on her face.

SCENE: The King kitchen/dining room. Evening. Alec, Janet, Felix, Cecily, and Daniel are sitting at the table eating supper. Nobody is saying a word.

Cecily (breaking the silence): Will someone say something? The silence is driving me crazy! (Pause.) I know Aunt Olivia and Uncle Jasper are leaving tomorrow, and Felix is leaving the day after, but that's no reason to keep silent.

Janet: Who's Felix?

Cecily rolls her eyes in disgust.

Cecily: My brother!? You know, the one who was born after Felicity and before me?!

Felix: You know, Mother, that's why I didn't tell you and Father--because you two would get upset. Especially you, Mother. (He points a finger at Janet.)

Janet (to Alec): Did you hear something, dear?

Felix slams his fist on the table angrily.

Alec (glaring at Felix): Settle down, young man!

Felix: When are you two going to understand I'm not a little boy anymore? Okay? This is not the same Felix King from nine years ago. I'm a young man now; I know how the world works. I'm old enough to make my own decisions. (Pause.) I decided to join the Navy. Can't you support my decision? (Another pause. Then, softly...) Excuse me.

Felix gets up and walks outside. Alec and Janet look at each other in a daze. A moment later, Cecily gets up to go after Felix. Cut to...

SCENE: King Farm veranda. Evening. Cecily walks out of the house; Felix is leaning on the railing with an agonized look on his face.

Cecily: Are you okay, Felix?

Felix: They don't understand, Cess.

Cecily: You've got to find a way to make them understand.

Felix (softly): I don't know how. (He turns to face Cecily.) I just don't know how. I'm having a hard time convincing Izzy that I'm doing the right thing.

Cecily: You'll find a way; I'm sure of it. You're a smart guy, Felix. I know you can come up with something.

Felix: I'm sure I will, too...and hopefully soon.

Cecily: You will, Felix.

They share a hug and go back inside. Cut to...

SCENE: The upstairs hallway at the Pettibone house. Evening. Muriel is ascending the stairs and is approaching the door on her left (viewer's right). She proceeds to knock on it.

Muriel (knocking on the door): Izzy? Supper's ready if you want to come down. (There is no response.) Izzy?

She opens the door to Izzy's room. From her point of view we see that the room (aside from its usual contents) is empty. Cut back to Muriel, with a look of horror on her face. She runs down the stairs. Cut to...

SCENE: Pettibone kitchen. Immediately after last scene. Muriel enters the kitchen, still with a shocked expression on her face. Clive looks up at her, stunned.

Clive: What is it? What's wrong?

Muriel (scared): Izzy's gone.

Clive (standing up): What?! (He goes to walk out, then stops and turns to face Muriel.) Don't just stand there, woman! We've got to find her!

Muriel (shaking it off): You're right; let's go.

Clive and Muriel walk out of the kitchen and out of the house. Cut to...

SCENE: The parlor at King Farm. Evening. Alec and Janet are sitting on the couch, reading. There is a knock at the door.

Alec: I'll get it.

Alec puts his book down and goes to the door. As he does, Cecily and Felix descend the front steps. Back at the door, Alec opens it to reveal an angry Clive and a distraught Muriel.

Alec (surprised): Clive, Muriel, what is it?

Clive (walking in and moving Alec aside): Where is she?

Alec: Wha--

Clive (screaming): Izzy!

Alec: She's not here, Clive.

Felix: Izzy ran away?

Muriel (upset): I went up to her room to tell her to come down for supper. I looked in her room, and she was gone. Do you know where she is?

Janet (walking toward Muriel): She's not here. I don't know where she is. None of us have seen her today.

Felix (approaching Muriel): Cecily and I saw her today, in town. Izzy and I had a fight; I thought she went back to your house.

Clive: Apparently she didn't come home. Where is she, Felix King?

Cecily: Mr. Pettibone, Izzy's not here. I haven't seen her since this morning, and neither has Felix. We'd be willing to help you look for her, if you like.

Clive: Thank you, Cecily. Come on.

Clive, Muriel, Cecily, and Felix exit the house.

SCENE: Inside the lighthouse. Evening. Izzy is sitting at the table. She looks as if she's been crying; her eyes are red and bloodshot, and her face is somewhat flushed. Her hair is also down and madded up.

Izzy (to herself): I can't believe Felix is leaving in two days. I refuse to believe it.

She sighs deeply. She then gets up and goes up to the top of the lighthouse. After she gets there, she looks out toward the ocean with a sad expression on her face. Cut to...

SCENE: The road, near the lighthouse. Evening. Muriel pulls her motorcar up to the beginning of the path to the lighthouse. She and Clive are about to get out when...

Felix (putting a hand on each of their shoulders): Wait. Let me go alone. Please?

Muriel nods in approval. Felix jumps out of the car and walks up the path to the lighthouse.

Cecily (to herself): I hope he can get to her this time.

SCENE: The swing in front of King Farm house. Evening. Alec and Janet are sitting on the swing; he has an arm around her.

Janet: Are you sure Felix is doing the right thing?

Alec: About what?

Janet: About joining the Navy. I mean, he loved working at the hotel so much, and then he quits and joins the Navy?!

Alec: I can sort of understand where he's coming from, though, you know? He worked at the White Sands for five years. As he got older, he got bored with it, and decided it was time for something new. To our surprise, the Navy just happened to be that "something new."

Janet: But he didn't tell us, Alec.

Alec: I know; that was wrong. Yet I can also understand why. He knew you would have a fit, so he kept quiet to protect you.

Janet: The way you put it, Alec, makes a whole lot of sense. Plus, there's no denying he's growing up and moving on. I only wish...(she pauses)

Alec: Wish what?

Janet: I just can't help wishing he'd stay a little boy.

Alec: I know you do, Janet, but unfortunately there's nothing we can do about it. Felix is a young man now. All we can do is support him and step aside.

Janet leans in and rests her head on Alec's chest. He strokes her arm lightly and kisses her forehead. Cut to...

SCENE: Hetty's bedroom at Rose Cottage. Evening. Hetty is packing some of her things in a trunk. Rachel enters the room nearly outraged.

Rachel: Apparently you didn't listen to me when we had that conversation earlier.

Hetty doesn't respond. Rachel walks over to Hetty's trunk and begins unpacking it. Hetty takes notice and slaps Rachel's hands.

Hetty: Goodness gracious, Rachel! Have you taken leave of your senses?

Rachel: I might ask you the same thing. You can't do this to yourself. Not only that; you can't do this to your sister and brother-in-law. (She pulls Hetty away from the trunk and sits her down on her bed.) Olivia Dale is a grown woman, Hetty. Let me assure you; she and Jasper did not jump to this decision lightly. Besides, this provides Jasper with a great opportunity. He can pursue his dream by joining the Royal Society. You should be proud of him, and you should respect their wishes and let them go. You owe them that much.

Moment of silence.

Hetty: You're right. I don't know what came over me.

Rachel: You were acting more like a mother than a supportive sister; that's what.

Hetty: I suppose I was.

Rachel puts an arm around Hetty and rubs her back.

Rachel: Now, how about I help you unpack and put everything away?

Hetty: Please.

They get up off the bed and finish unpacking Hetty's trunk. Later they begin putting things in her closet. Cut to...

SCENE: The top of the lighthouse. Evening. Izzy is still sadly looking out toward the ocean. Behind her, Felix starts walking toward her.

Felix: Izzy.

Izzy (not looking): Please, Felix. Not now.

Felix: You can't avoid me forever. Come on, Iz. Talk to me.

Izzy (taking a deep breath): Why didn't you tell me?

Felix: I was afraid you'd be angry at me.

Izzy: Come on, Felix. What's the real reason?

Felix: Why do you care? You've been avoiding me this long. How can you suddenly care now?

Izzy: I care, Felix. Now, I asked you a question, and I'd like an answer, if you please. Why didn't you tell me you joined the Navy?

Felix: Why didn't I tell you?

Izzy (nearing tears): Yes, Felix. Why?

Felix: Because I love you!

Izzy turns to look at Felix. Her sad expression becomes one of surprise.

Izzy: What did you say?

Felix (taking her hands): I said I love you.

Izzy becomes wide-eyed. She then releases her hands from Felix's grip and runs away crying.

Felix: Izzy!

SCENE: The Dale house. Early morning. Alec and Felix are helping Olivia and Jasper take their things out to the wagon.

Alec: You've been very quiet this morning, Felix. Did you ever find Izzy last night?

Felix (despairing): We did. She asked me why I didn't tell her about enlisting.

Alec: And what did you tell her?

Pause. Felix lets out a big sigh and runs his fingers through his hair.

Felix (softly): I told her I loved her. Then she ran away crying.

Alec walks toward him and puts an arm around him.

Alec: It's alright, Felix. You didn't do anything wrong. All you did was tell her the truth. She just needs some time to absorb it and let it sink in.

Felix: I know.

From up the road, we see Clive approach Alec and Felix. He is very upset, walking at a fast pace and with a sad expression on his face.

Clive (shouting, in an angry tone): Felix King!

Felix: What is it, Mr. Pettibone?

Clive stops in front of Felix and punches him in the jaw. Felix is knocked to the ground.

Alec (shocked): Clive Pettibone! What's gotten into you? Good God, man!

Clive: That's what your son gets after last night. My Izzy was crying nearly all night; it took almost an hour for Muriel to get her settled down.

Alec helps Felix up from the ground. While getting up, Felix hold the right side of his jaw with his right hand.

Alec: You obviously don't know the whole story, Clive. Did you ask Izzy what happened?

Clive: I didn't think I needed to.

Alec: Then I suggest you go back to your house and talk to Izzy.

Clive says nothing. He turns around and walks back toward the village. Cut to...

SCENE: The Dale kitchen. A minute later. Alec, Felix, Olivia (holding Alicia), and Jasper are seated at the table. Felix is holding an ice bag on his right jaw. Alec has finished explaining the situation with Felix and Izzy to Jasper and Olivia.

Olivia (stunned): Merciful Providence! And Clive didn't even know what happened?

Felix: Of course not, Aunt Olivia. Why do you think he punched me in the jaw? For my health?

Olivia: He shouldn't have done that, Felix.

Felix: I know, but he did anyway.

Olivia: Well, you're just going to have to be patient; that's all. Eventually, Clive will understand, and Izzy will sort out her feelings.

Alec: Your aunt Olivia's right, you know.

Felix: I know.

Alec gets up from his seat.

Alec (to Olivia and Jasper): Well, I suppose we should get you two to the train station.

Olivia: Yeah, I suppose you should. (She gets up and walks toward the door.) I just hope Hetty isn't there with her bags packed.

Felix: What do you mean?

Olivia: She came over yesterday and said she was going to come with us to England.

Felix rolls his eyes in disgust.

Felix: I don't believe it!

Jasper: Neither...did we. Later we went to Rose Cottage...to talk her out of it.

Olivia: That didn't help, though. I only hope either Rachel Lynde talks some sense into her, or she comes to her senses on her own.

Alec: Well (looking at his pocketwatch), it's time to go. Shall we?

Alec and Felix exit. Meanwhile, Olivia and Jasper take a walk through all the rooms, making sure they didn't forget anything. As they walk around, the camera gets a shot at all the furniture, which is covered up in sheets. The windows are also boarded up on the outside. They walk upstairs to the bedrooms--first theirs, then Montgomery's.

Olivia: You know what the sad part about moving is? Monty and Alicia may never remember living here.

Jasper: But we'll be back, Olivia. (Pause. Then, softer...) I know it.

Olivia and Jasper take one last look around before returning downstairs and exiting the house for the last time. Cut to...

SCENE: Train station. Morning. Olivia's and Jasper's things are being loaded on to the train. Meanwhile, they are surrounded by members of the King family.

Janet: Oh, I'm going to miss you all so much! (She takes Alicia from Olivia's arms.) Alicia, Auntie Janet's going to miss you, Monty, and your mommy and daddy. I love you. (She gives Alicia a kiss on the forehead and hands her back to Olivia. She then gives her, Jasper, and Montgomery hugs.)

Alec gives Olivia a hug, shakes Jasper's hand, gives Alicia a soft kiss, and ruffles Monty's hair. Felicity, Gus, Felix, and Cecily say their various goodbyes (this is ad-libbed). Finally, Hetty approaches them.

Olivia (surprised): Where's your things?

Hetty: I've been thinking about that, Olivia. It's time I stopped acting like a mother toward you and started being more supportive. You and Jasper go on to England yourselves. I wish you well.

Hetty hugs Olivia and Jasper, and then gives Alicia and Montgomery kisses.

Hetty: Oh, and be sure to write to us once you get settled in.

Olivia: Of course, Hetty.

The Dales make their way on to the train. The other Kings wave goodbye as the train pulls away. After it's out of view...

Janet (to Alec): First Sara, now Olivia and Jasper. Tomorrow it'll be Felix.

Alec: Now, Janet.

Janet (upset): Don't "Now, Janet" me! Felix is leaving tomorrow! Our son is leaving! Doesn't that mean anything to you?

Felix: Mother! Will you stop worrying yourself over me?! You've been doting on me since I was a little boy. Please! I'm almost eighteen years old. It's time to leave me be, Mother. Let me live my own life now, and stop doting on me all the time.

Alec and Janet say nothing. They stand there speechless while Felix walks away, visibly upset. Cecily leaves and goes after him, leaving Hetty, Gus, and Felicity to deal with the distraught couple.

Janet (to Hetty, in an angry tone): It's all your fault.

Hetty (surprised): What? J--Janet, I...I ... I...

Janet: You're the one who filled his head with all that "Do your duty to the Empire" nonsense.

Hetty: Well, I believe in doing one's duty to the Empire, but I didn't make Felix do anything, Janet. No. If anything, he made this decision entirely on his own.

Janet: I don't believe it.

Alec: Both of you, stop it! Felix is a good young man, level-headed, strong-willed, and I'm surehe didn't come to this decision lightly.

Gus: No, he didn't.

Janet: And since when do you know my son better than I do, Gus Pike?

Gus: He came to see me the day before my weddin'. He said he was thinkin' about joinin' the Navy. He told me he was bored with workin' at the hotel, that he was ready for somethin' new.

Alec: Why didn't he just tell us?

Gus: Because he knew you all would throw a fit. Especially (pointing at Janet) you, Janet.

Janet: Me?!

Felicity: Yes, you. Think about it, Mother. You threw a fit when he wanted to ride in the steeplechase. You had a fit whenever he decided to do something on his own. Usually, I would be against him joining the Navy, too, but this time it doesn't phase me like it would have years ago. I'm not sure why. Providence, maybe? (Pause) Give Felix a chance, Mother.

SCENE: The road toward King Farm. Morning. Cecily has finally caught up with Felix; they're talking about Janet's panicking.

Cecily: Felix, you know how Mother can be.

Felix: Of course I know how Mother can be. That's why I didn't tell her! Until all of you saw me in uniform for the first time, the only person who knew about my joining the Navy was Gus.

Cecily: No wonder Izzy was mad at you, too.

Felix: Tell me about it.

Cecily: What did you tell her last night? She left the lighthouse very upset.

Felix: I told her I loved her.

Cecily (not believing it): Really, Felix. What did you tell her?

Felix: I'm telling you the truth, Cecily. I told her I loved her. She didn't take it well, so she left.

Cecily: Wow. She's more upset about this than I thought.

Felix: Yeah, she is.

Pause.

Cecily: You really do love her, don't you? Otherwise, you wouldn't be so persistent in asking for her forgiveness.

Felix: Yeah, I love her. She means everything to me, you know?

Cecily (wrapping an arm around him): Well, you did what you could. The rest is up to Izzy. Give her time.

She and Felix continue walking down the road. Cut to...

SCENE: The veranda at the Pettibone house. Early afternoon. Izzy is sitting in a chair looking out toward the road woefully. Muriel comes out with a cup of tea; she sees Izzy in her distressed state.

Muriel: Izzy, is something wrong? (No response.) Why am I asking? Of course I know what's wrong. (She sits down next to Izzy and puts an arm around her.) You're still upset about Felix going away, aren't you?

Izzy (broken): He said he loves me, Muriel. What kind of person goes and joins the Navy behind your back and then says it's because he loves you?

Muriel: The kind that does love you--truly, madly, and deeply.

Izzy (surprised): What?!

Muriel: You know, for a while I was agreeing with you, but now I see why he did what he did. He wanted to join the Navy, but he didn't want to hurt you. That's why he didn't tell you. He wanted to save you a lot of heartache and pain.

Izzy (outraged): You really think that?! That's outrageous!

Muriel: I really do think so, Izzy. Give him a chance.

Izzy: No. He lied to me, and he's not going to get away with it this time.

Izzy gets up and storms into the house just as Clive walks out.

Clive: What's with her?

Muriel: She's still upset over Felix. (Pause.) Let me ask you something, Clive. Do you reallythink Felix meant to hurt Izzy by not telling her about joining the Navy? Before you answer, I don't want your affections for Izzy to cloud your judgment.

Clive: They've never clouded my judgment.

Muriel: Okay. How about going over to the Dales' house this morning and punching Felix in the jaw? Was that good judgment?

Clive: He hurt my daughter's feelings.

Muriel: There you go again! Now, eliminate that from your mind and think about this: Do you think Felix's main intention by not telling Izzy was to hurt her feelings?

Pause.

Clive: No.

Muriel: Then why are you so upset? Clive, you can't make everything better for Izzy all the time. She and Felix have to settle this on their own. Leave them be, please? For Izzy's sake?

She gets up and leans her head on Clive's chest.

Clive: I just hate seeing Izzy upset; that's all.

Muriel: I know. But she's almost seventeen; she's a young woman now. She's got to face Felix on her own.

The couple shares a loving embrace. Cut to...

SCENE: Izzy's bedroom. Early afternoon. Izzy is sitting on her bed, crying, and looking out her window (facing the road).

Izzy (voice-over; her thoughts): Does he really love me? Does Felix King really love me? I can't believe it! I refuse to believe it. If he loved me, he would've told me; he wouldn't have waited until now. But why? Why did he wait so long?

She buries her head in her arms, which are resting on her knees. Fade to...

SCENE: King Farm house. Evening. Alec, Janet, Felix, Cecily, Elbert, Daniel, Hetty, Gus, Felicity, and the Deans are eating supper--oven baked chicken, potatoes, and beans.

All is unusually quiet right now. Then again, everyone's eating their supper. We get close-ups of Gus and Felicity, then Cecily and Elbert, followed by Alec and Janet, and Hetty, and finally Felix, who is eating a piece of chicken meat with a sad look on his face, realizing it's his last meal at King Farm for a long time. Cut to...

SCENE: Alec and Janet's bedroom. Night. Alec is sound asleep, but Janet is tossing and turning, having a dream.

DREAM SEQUENCE: In the background, there is an acoustic guitar playing a song, yet it's unrecognizable at the moment. While it's playing, we see images with Janet and/or Felix (these are scenes where she's with Felix, or she's there watching something happen to him--the scenes listed are just highlights of the dream)...

1) Felix winning the Spelling Bee (The Witch of Avonlea)

2) Felix: "How can you hug me and be angry at me at the same time?"/Janet: "Because I'm your mother." (Incident at Vernon River)

3) Felix declaring he doesn't want the farm when he's older. (Fathers and Sons)

4) Janet revealing to Felix her fear of horses. (The Great Race)

5) Felix and Clive holding up the winner's trophy after they've run the steeplechase. (The Great Race)

6) Janet riding Prince as part of her and Felix's deal (he donated his share of the winnings to the school library fund; in exchange, Felix had her ride Prince to get over her fear). (The Great Race)

7) Felix ardently defending his mother after joining the Knights of P. E. I. (Fools and Kings)

8) Felix with the Knights singing "Glow Worm" (Fools and Kings)

9) Janet tells Felix what a lady expects from a gentleman. (Love May Be Blind...but the Neighbours Ain't)

10) Janet punishing Felix and Cecily for all the chaos they created. (Total Eclipse)

11) Felix appears in uniform for the first time, coming out of the King Farm house saying, "I guess rebel runs in the family." (So Dear to My Heart)

While the dream is going on, the music in the background gets louder. Soon, it's plain to see (or hear, in this case) that the background music is an "acoustic guitar only" version of "Time of Your Life" (a.k.a. "Good Riddance") by Green Day. At the end of the dream, the music fades out, and the camera gets a close-up of Janet, now wide awake. It pulls away as she gets up, puts her house coat on, and leaves the bedroom. Cut to...

SCENE: King Farm kitchen. Immediately after the last scene. Felix is sitting at the table eating cookies, while Janet is descending the stairs. Once she sees him, she's stunned.

Janet: Felix! What are you doing up?

Felix (looking over his shoulder): Mother! (Pause.) I couldn't sleep. What are you doing?

Janet: I couldn't sleep, either. (She takes a seat next to Felix.) Is something wrong?

Felix: Not really. (Pause.) I was just thinking about how this is my last night here for a while--at least until Christmas. I mean, all I know is this farm, and as much as I hate it, I'm going to miss it.

Janet: I can understand that. You're stepping out into the unknown, and it scares you. You don't know what's going to happen to you, and what it'll be like far from home and everything and everyone you know. That's totally normal. It happened to me before I married your father. But after I walked down the aisle of my wedding, I felt so much better; all my fear went away. Let me tell you, Felix, when you get on the train tomorrow and arrive in Halifax, all your fears will go away, too. (Silence. Felix gives her a "Who are you, and what did you do to my mother?" look.) What is it, dear?

Felix: It's strange. You're not angry with me anymore.

Janet: You're right, Felix; I'm not. I think I finally realize why you didn't tell us. You knew I wouldn't take it well if you told us right away. You wanted to save me from the heartache of knowing sooner. I also realized you were indeed doing the right thing, and you're old enough to decide for yourself what you want to do with your life. Plus, now I see you not only as my son (she reaches for and takes his hand), but as a young man. I'm proud of you, Felix King.

Felix smiles at Janet. They lean in and exchange a warm embrace. Finally, they get up and walk back upstairs.

SCENE: Gus and Felicity's bedroom. Late night. Felicity is lying awake looking at the ceiling.

Felicity (softly): I can't believe it. Felix is actually leaving.

Gus turns over to face Felicity; he's half asleep.

Gus (in a semi-slurred tone): You're not havin' doubts, are ya, Felicity?

Felicity: No. It's just that it's now staring me right in the face, you know? No turning back. Felix is leaving tomorrow.

Gus: Now you're afraid. (He takes Felicity's left hand.) Don't be. You know Felix is doing the right thing. You got no reason to worry. (Pause.) Except for you're his older sister and you feel like a second mother to him. Just be supportive, Felicity. Felix is gonna be fine.

Gus kisses her hand, releases it, and goes back to sleep. Felicity turns over on her right side and continues to lay in bed, awake.

SCENE: King Farm (yes, in the farm). Early morning. Felix is cleaning out the stalls just as Alec walks in.

Alec: I'm surprised you're in here this morning. I thought you'd be in your room packing.

Felix: I'm going to go pack, as soon as I'm done in here.

Alec (approaching Felix): What's wrong, Felix? You're not usually this eager to do your chores.

Felix: I know. It's just...it's just that I'm leaving today. Work seems to be the only thing that keeps me sane. (Pause as Felix sits on a barrel nearby.) That, and thinking of Izzy running into my arms apologizing and saying she loves me as well.

Alec: Give her time, Felix. Someday she'll find it in her heart to forgive you. (He puts a hand on Felix's shoulder.) Come on. I'll finish up in here later. You've gotta go pack.

Felix gets up, and he and Alec exit the barn together. Cut to...

SCENE: Izzy's bedroom. Morning. She's lying in bed, but...

Izzy (sitting up with a start): Felix! He's leaving today! (Pause as she looks down to see that she's sitting in her bed.) What am I doing?

She jumps out of bed to get dressed. Imagine people at home "watching" this cheering, thinking, "Finally! Izzy's using her God-given sense!" Cut to...

SCENE: Outside the King Farm house. Several minutes later. Janet and Cecily are waiting in the wagon. Alec then comes out the front door with a couple of suitcases.

Alec: Well, that's everything. (He sets the suitcases down in the back of the wagon.)

Cecily: Where's Felix?

Cut to the front door. Felix walks out, dressed in his Naval uniform, looking as self-confident as ever. He walks over to the wagon and gets in next to Cecily. Alec gets in next to Janet, grabs the reins, and drives away. Cut to...

SCENE: Near the stairs of the Pettibone house. Morning. Muriel walks up to the stairs wearing an apron over her dress.

Muriel (calling up the stairs): Izzy! What are you doing? Breakfast is ready!

Izzy (from upstairs): Will you keep it warm for me?

Muriel: Sure. Why?

Izzy (descending the stairs): Because I'm going to look for Felix.

Muriel: What?!

Izzy (going toward the door): I have to tell him I'm sorry and that I also love him.

Imagine all the Felix and Izzy fans "watching," and cheering louder than they did for Izzy just getting out of bed!

Muriel: Well, what are you waiting for? Go!

Izzy runs back toward Muriel and gives her a hug. She then runs out the front door. Muriel looks on, smiling. Cut to...

SCENE: "Main Street" in Avonlea. Morning. Izzy is running down the street, across the covered bridge, and in the direction of the train station. Cut to...

SCENE: Train station. Same time. The rest of the King family are saying their goodbyes to Felix.

Cecily: Be sure to write to us often. I don't want to get bored.

Felix: I'll remember.

They exchange hugs. He then goes over to Hetty and hugs her.

Felix: Goodbye, Aunt Hetty.

Hetty: Take care of yourself, Felix.

They release each other. Felix gives Gus a hug, saying nothing. He then walks over to Felicity; she's crying.

Felix: Decided to save your tears for me, huh?

Felicity (sincerely): I really am going to miss you, Felix King. If we were much younger, I don't think I'd care, but now it's like...(She throws herself into his arms.) This pains me more now than it would then.

Felix: It's okay, Felicity. If it's any consolation, I'm going to miss you, too.

Felix and Felicity let go. He then makes his way over to Alec and Janet and nearly throws himself into her arms. After a long embrace, he hugs Alec. While they're hugging, the camera cuts over to Izzy running toward the train station.

Izzy: Felix!

Felix lets go of Alec and begins to walk toward the train.

Izzy (louder and closer-sounding than before): Felix!

Felix looks over his shoulder and walks toward the sound.

Felix: Izzy? (He walks a little further and finally realizes it is indeed...) Izzy!!

They run toward each other. Once they're close enough, she jumps into his arms.

Izzy (near frantic): Felix, I'm so sorry. I didn't understand.

Felix: No. It was my fault; I should have told you sooner.

Izzy: No; it's okay. I understand now why you waited. (She jumps down out of his arms.) I do. (Pause.) I love you, Felix King.

Felix: And I love you (short pause), Isolde Pettibone.

They lean in and exchange a long kiss. We see some of the other King family members looking on, smiling. After the kiss, Felix and Izzy walk toward the train, hand in hand. They release each other, and Felix boards the train.

Izzy: Promise you'll write to me?

Felix: On my life.

Izzy blows Felix a kiss and goes to join his family. The train begins to pull away. Felix waves to everyone; the others wave in return, yelling various goodbyes. Close up on Izzy after Felix is out of view. She is smiling; she has finally realized Felix is doing the right thing. Fade to...

SCENE MONTAGE:

1) Sara sitting in her house in Montreal, reading a book.

2) Jasper, Olivia, Montgomery, and Alicia on a boat to England. They're standing on the deck, looking out at the vast Atlantic Ocean.

3) Felix going to sit down in his seat on the way to Charlottetown. From there, he would board a boat and head to Halifax.

4) The rocky shores of P. E. I. Waves are crashing onto the rocks (similar to the opening scene of the sixth season credits).
