The Gus Pike Interviews

Interview #8: Felix King

Daisy: Good morning friends! What a treat we have in the studio for you today! My guest has arrived all the way from Avonlea on PEI; please welcome, with me, Mister Felix King. Felix, I'm delighted to see you, and I want to take a moment to thank your parents for granting us permission to interview you here today.

FK: Thanks Daisy! This is the first time I've been off the Island! Wait 'til they hear what I've done since I've been here; Felicity'll probably burst wide open, she's so jealous! She's jealous 'cause I'm the first one in the family to get interviewed, and she's mad as a hornet that she didn't get to come along!

Daisy: Well, try not to rub it in too much, Felix; besides, her turn will come soon enough. In truth, I'm a bit surprised, but very pleased, that your parents consented to let their boy travel such a long distance without either one of them along to...er...supervise the journey.

FK: Oh, Father wasn't terribly worried, but Mother sure was! Sullivan had to come talk to her and tell her it was alright; even then she kept nagging me all the way to the train station, and she kept pestering my chaperone too; we were glad to get away, let me tell you!

Daisy: Yes, Felix, I can imagine! And just where, by the way, IS your chaperone?

FK: Oh, he'll be back after the interview is over, he has some errands he needs to run.

Daisy: Fair enough! Let's get started, shall we? I'd like to talk to you about the infamous ice-fishing trip you made with your father and Jasper, when you came across Gus all alone, and invited him to join you.

FK: Oh, that was one heck of a trip! Father and Jasper were telling us all kinds of stories; you should've heard the ones that didn't get on the tape! One time Father took one of Aunt Hetty's dresses over to Bert Pott's house, and he and Bert, and Uncle Jasper and Archie Gillis put the dress on a...

Daisy (interrupting hastily): Ah, Felix, I'm sure we'd all enjoy hearing about the dress, and who wore it, but we're getting off the subject! Now, Gus asked your father how old he was when he and your mother first began courting.

FK: "Yeah, I know. I just can't understand all that mushy love stuff! I mean, Gus is a great guy; he can do anything he wants! He lives alone, works at the White Sands; he's seen lots of exotic places, and met all kinds of interesting people. I don't know why he wants to stay in Avonlea; I'd sure get out if I could! He could even have run away with that Amanda Stone!

Daisy (testily): Let's not bring her into this, shall we, Felix?

FK: Oh, right, right. (Chuckling...) I sure liked the way you told those two off last week! But mother said she didn't want me listening to it because you were saying something about anatomy.

Daisy (blushing): Ah....yes...anatomy, Felix. We've all got it, haven't we? Now, back to Gus, and your sister.

FK: Awww, do we HAVE to talk about her?

Daisy: Well no, we don't HAVE to, but you know, Gus was starting to show some interest in her on the trip.

FK: I know, I know, I just don't know WHY!! Out of all the girls he could pick, and he's probably seen a lot of 'em, why HER? Just the thought of kissing Felicity makes me sicker than those berries I ate last summer!

Daisy (smiling a bit wistfully): Well, Felix, it's kind of hard to explain but...love doesn't really make much sense. You don't follow your head when you love someone, you follow your heart, sometimes even when it leads you astray.

FK: Well, I'M not going to! No girl's going to make me turn into a blithering idiot!

Daisy (laughing): Are you saying that Gus, and any other lovestruck male, is a blithering idiot?

FK: No, no, not Gus! I mean, he gets all spoony and stuff over Felicity, but he's always real quiet. You know, tries to hide it and pretend like nothing's goin' on. Even Gus can't hide it for long though. I like him when he's...well, NORMAL, but when he starts asking about Felicity, his eyes get kinda funny, and that worries me, 'cause Gus is a good guy, and I don't want him to get all soft. Felicity isn't worth it.

Daisy: Sometimes love, like respect, has to be earned, Felix. I think she still has a lot of growing to do; fifteen is far too young to be serious about love, but I believe she'll be worthy of it eventually. Even Gus still has some maturing to do.

FK: Now you sound like Aunt Hetty! You look more like a kid than a grown-up though.

Daisy: Thanks, Felix. I feel like a kid much of the time, but I've done my share of growing. Life forces it on you sooner or later, you know. Now there's a scene when you're with Gus, and you try to ask him about a rather personal subject.

FK (excited): You mean the birds and the bees? Gosh, Daisy, I didn't think one simple question would be so complicated! Nobody wanted to tell me anything; even Gus got awful embarrassed about it when I asked him. He just kinda stammered, and I could see him blush even out there in the snow and all.

Daisy (smiling again): Yes, Felix, I remember the blush.

FK: He still didn't tell me anything though about men and women! I had to find it out from Uncle Jasper... (Breaking off...) What's that smell?

Daisy: It's coming from the refreshment table, where we'll be heading in a few minutes. Now Felix, I...Felix! Pay attention!

FK: I'm sorry, Daisy, it's just that I haven't eaten since breakfast, and it smells almost as good as the cookies Mother always makes.

Daisy: Felix, I PROMISE, you can go over to the refreshment table as soon as we're done. Now, I have a question for you. Love may be a mystery to men, but there's an even greater mystery for women. Why do men want to go out, in the middle of winter, and sit for hours freezing their backsides waiting for that elusive fish to show up--which it seldom does, by the way--and then sit around in a little hut beating their chests and jumping into the frozen water and risking death, pneumonia, wet drawers, and I don't know what else, just to prove that they're still...men?

FK: Uhhh...because it's fun?

Daisy (aside): Guess I set myself up for that one. (To Felix) Alright Felix, I won't tease any more about it. There must be something about growing up in that vast frozen solitude that brings out the ice-fisher in everybody.

FK (eagerly): You should try it sometime, Daisy! I think you'd like it; you don't look like the sort of girl who'd be a baby about gutting fish or walking in the snow to the outhouse.

Daisy: Felix! (Whispering...) You're not supposed to say that word, you know.

FK (whispering back): Sorry!

Daisy (still whispering): It's alright. (Aloud) We still have a few minutes, and I'd like to ask about your chaperone, how he's been and what he's been doing lately.

FK: Oh, Zach is great! We had a lot of fun on the trip, and he promised to take me to see a game before we leave! He and I are practically best friends now!

Daisy: I'm glad to hear the two of you get along so well; I figured he'd be a good chaperone for you. He's had quite a busy year, hasn't he?

FK: I'll say! He was in a play not too long ago, he was Canadian of the Month in September, and he has a film that he's really busy promoting right now.

Daisy: The Bay of Love and Sorrows. I've heard lots of good things about it; have you seen it, Felix?

FK (with uncertainty): I don't know if I'll be able to; we don't have a theatre in Avonlea yet, and besides, Mother and Father may not approve.

Daisy: I understand, Felix; I'm pretty particular about what we watch at our home as well. I think we've covered just about everything in our interview today, and it's certainly been a pleasure to talk with you this morning, Felix....Felix?....Is something wrong? You look...perplexed.

FK (embarrassed): Well, there IS something I was thinking of asking you...but...

Daisy (encouraging): Go on, Felix, what is it? I can't help you, you know, unless you tell me what it is.

FK: Well, you seem like a really nice person and all...

Daisy (smiling reassuringly): I AM a really nice person, Felix, and we're running out of time. What can I do for you?

FK: Well, you're a girl, right?

Daisy: Er....last time I checked, yes.

FK: And girls have feelings too, right?

Daisy: Felix, everybody has feelings, unless they're a rock. Now, if you don't come out and say what it is you want to say, then I'll have to end this now.

FK (in a rush): Daisy, what do women and men do when they have...you know....THOSE kinds of feelings, and they can't do anything about it?

Daisy (aside): Oh Lord... (A beat.) You know, Felix, that refreshment table sounds awfully good right about now. Our guest this morning has been Felix King...

FK: PLEASE Daisy, Zach has been too busy today to talk to me, and nobody else will tell me! I really want to know!

Daisy: Felix...really, I...I think you ought to discuss this with your parents; I certainly can't talk about it with you on the air!

FK: But Daisy! They won't tell me! I know what to do when you...do what you do, you know? But I don't know what to do when you don't do what you want to do because you know what you want to do isn't the right thing to do? Do YOU know what to do?

Daisy (blushing furiously, whispering): I'll tell you when we're off the air. (Louder...) Our guest this morning has been Avonlea's own Felix King. Felix, thank you for joining us today, it was a pleasure to have in the studio.

FK: Uh, thanks Daisy. Can we go over to the refreshment table now?

Daisy (sighing): Yes, Felix, you and I will both go over there together. We'll be back next week, with a very interesting guest from the Windy City of Chicago. See you then...

(Later, off the air...)

FK (with his mouth full): So, Daisy, can you tell me, please????

Daisy: Please don't talk with your mouth full of food, Felix, it's bad manners. Yes, I'll tell you what I can, but you know, you really should talk to your parents about it when you get back to Avonlea.

FK: I will, I promise. So?? What do you do??

Daisy (lowering her voice): Well, Felix, I'm human like everybody else, and I have...uh..."those" kinds of feelings too. But I've found a simple way to...take care of them when they start to bother me."

FK: Really? How??

Daisy: Whenever I start to....get one of those feelings, I reach for a piece of chocolate. I always keep some nearby, just in case. Break off a piece, stick it in your mouth, chew ten times slowly, and swallow.

FK (leaning forward eagerly): And then what?

Daisy: Why, then the feeling passes, and everything's fine again. Guaranteed to work every time, Felix.

FK: Oh Boy! Wait 'til I tell Zach about this!

Daisy (hastily): Felix! If it's all the same to you, I'd like you to keep this just between the two of us, okay?

FK: Okay, if you say so Daisy. I'm awfully glad I talked to you! Hey there's Zach! I have to go now Daisy, thanks for the advice!

Daisy: Oh, Felix, wait! Before you go, there IS something I'd like you to talk to Zach about. There's a lovely diva named Shelly who would really like to meet him sometime. Felix, FELIX???

FK (from the doorway): Uh, I heard you, Daisy. A diva named Shelly wants to send Zach some chocolate. Okay, goodbye Daisy! (He starts going down the hallway with Zach.) I'll race you to the elevator.

ZB: You're on, buddy!

Daisy: No, wait! Felix, you didn't hear me! Felix?....Zach?...
